Evaluation: Question 3

Question 3: What kind of institution might distribute your media product and why?

The production company used for our thriller film was CANDI STUDIOS. It is a local film production company who sponsor low budget film mades by budding young film makers.

The distribution company used for our thriller film was HAMMER FILM. Hammer is a London based production subsidiary of Exclusive Media and a legendary British film brand.

Our film is a local British release for mainly the uk audience. In order to get major funding for our film, we would have to go to many film festivals such as Cannes film festival, to network with film companies who would be interested in our little film.

As a local british film, we would have cheaper production values. Special effects wouldn't be as lavish as those of hollywood films but would still suit its purposes.

I think hammer film would be best suited to distributing our film since it is already london based and has produced/distributed many successful thriller/horror films in the past such as; The Abominable Snowman (1957), The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) and Dracula (1958). More recently Hammer Film has produced/distributed The Woman in Black which stars Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe. We could use this to our favour. As The Woman in Black gets bigger and more press, we could use this as a chance to advertise our film as well. With The Woman in black showing trailers literally everywhere, we could have a really quick 20 second trailer of our film straight after it.

As well as advertising through The Woman in Black, we could advertise online using major social networking sites. Since Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr  and Youtube have become very popular over the last few years, we could pay a small few to advertise on these sites.

After advertising, we would like our thriller film to be shown in local cinemas like, picture house, Cineworld and Vue. The most successful way to showcase our thriller film to our target audience would be to pay to show it The Screen on the Green. This cinema allows your to copy your film onto a dvd and pay to have a screening there. This way, through advertising we could let our target audience know about our film screening and then hopefully they come to watch it. If that is successful and the feedback is positive then we would be more confident to reaching out to bigger and better companies.

Evaluation: Question 1

Wednesday, 7 March 2012

Main Problems We faced:

When filming the opening sequence we came across many different problems which caused us either to re-film entire scene's or lose some clips. We think that if we watched through all our clips before leaving the location would of helped us gain better shots. For example, we wasted a whole lesson filming the opening sequence at Muhammed's house as the continuity was poor and shots were badly angled.  This meant that we had to film the whole sequence again because of the weather as the snow had gone. However we thought that this helped us realise what we had to do to produce better footage. Overall the continuity of our new opening sequence is much better but the glare in the shots ruins it.

The weather  and lighting was also a big issue, because we filmed on two different days. The lighting came out much darker then we hoped meaning we had to cut and alter many of our shots. This meant we lost many good shots and effects. Also the contrast between the living room shot and the walking up the stairs affected the continuity. So if we had the chance to film this again we would have to consider brightening the bulb.

Other issues we faced was with adding the title sequence. Our opening sequence was quite short so there was not enough space and time to add all the title sequences affectively. Also we kept forgetting to frequently save our work which led to us losing some scenes and the changes we made.

Sound

Due to the importance of music in our film we had to take the making of our music very seriously, one of the ways in which we show this is through how we created two pieces of music as shown above. One was dark and slow, one was dark and more upbeat. We decided that our film was slow as it is so we needed the music to add some pace to it

Title Sequence

To create the title sequence we decided to use 'livefonts' and chose to do the 'itchy animations' font. We did the size of the fonts '50' in the colour dark red. We chose to use these as we thought it went with our theme of a spooky satanic thriller.

Producing our soundtrack.

For our film, as there was hardly any dialogue we needed to create some non diagetic music. First we had to choose the genre of our film and then allocate suitable music. as our film is a satanic thriller we decided some dark music in a minor scale would be appropriate.we Mohammed and Ali decided to use garageband as our means for producing the music, we layered some dark orchestral string sound then proceded to add bass and more string. We then looked at the timing of our film in order to fine cut it to synchronise, once finished we layered over the film for further editing.

Day Three Anaysis

In the final day of filming we managed to finish the rest of the sequence. This included the walking up the stairs and the bathroom scene. We thought that overall today was successful as we got some really good footage. For example the shot of him walking up the stairs and the candle is going into the camera shot. This made the scene look dark and eerie. One big problem was the weather. On the third day of filming the weather was much more sunnier which made some of the scenes too bright. For example when he was walking up the stairs the background was much more lighter then when we came into the house which affected the continuity of the sequence. Also because the scenes of in the living room already came out much darker then we hoped made the contrast between the two scenes too confusing. Therefore we had to try and shorten the clips to hide the light.

Editing update

Here is a update video of us editing our thriller video. In this video we are talking about the issues of our clips. For example some of the clips are too fast and way too short, therefore doesn't flow within the sequence.  We decided to change the speed of some parts of the clips.

Day two Analysis

On the second day of filming, we managed to film the first beginning of the sequence again, we also did the throwing keys on the blood table, the transformation in the living room, walking up the stairs and the bathroom scene.  We made sure we didn't change the distance between the camera and the actor to much to show continuity. We all thought that today was much more successful as we managed to film much more from the time given and that our shots came out better. Hoever we still did come across many problems. For example, in two of the clips of him walking down the streets there is a glare across the screen. This was one of the main issues of our opening sequence as we couldn't erase that scene as it was vital. We also had no time to re film it either.

Photo's from Day two

Here are some photos from our  second day of filming where we filmed the living room scene and the upstairs bath scenes.

Day One Analysis

For the first day of filming we decided to film the opening sequence in Finsbury park. This is because our main location was in morden and it was too far to travel and film within 1hr and 45mins. We decided to film outside Muhammeds house as we knew that there was a path up to his house. After a few hours of filming we managed to film the whole outside sequence however when we had the chance to edit it together we found many problems. The main issue was continuity, the different shots of him on the phone were either too close and to far from the actor so when we merged them together it became too confusing. The clip above is of one of our outakes. Due to not re watching our footage before leaving , we didn't realise that Muhammed was in the background and because we cant crop him out, the clip is couldnt be used. That was one of the vital clips of the opening scene and so we decided to re film the whole sequence again at the real location. The reason that we chose not to film that particular scene again is because of the change of weather.
However, we did think there were some good shots and ideas with these clips. For example by filming in this particular location we got a clip of tracking along a brick wall (shown in the video above) We thought this was effective as we thought that we could add the title sequence onto it.
