Question 1

An advantage in all film openings was the fact that they gave very little away  this useful because it makes the audience want to know more. Other factors are things such as actor’s names in the opening credits. The obligatory things needed in the opening are trademark names and logos of all companies, credits for directors and producers.

We followed the traditional opening style. We opened with the Production Company and studio.

Main Actor
Music Composer

We then went on to Credit the costume designer, casting manager, film editor, set design, creative director, executive producer as well at the title of our film ‘Lucifers Disciple.

The Shining as you can see very similar to our film they opened with the production company Warner Bros and in the next photo it is the main actor’s name.
A way in which our intro challenges the norm conventions of film openings is we left the film title till the end of the opening sequence because if we put the title at the beginning the audience would have know what the movie was about.

Question 3: What kind of institution might distribute your media product and why?
Our production company is Candi Studios as it is local and helps young directors and filmmakers like me it was the smartest of choices.
Our film is distributed by HAMMER FILM,  Hammer is a London based film distributor. known for its recent big film The Woman In Black.

Our reason for choosing this company is because we believe that being a British local independent film its best that we go to a British distributor as it would be more convenient.
Some problems with being an independent film is low budget, low budget leads to less famous actors which won’t bring in as many people. A low budget will also cause our films effects to be less fancy.  A way in which we can gain a wider audience is by going to a film festival but being an independent film we can’t go to any one we’d have to go to Sundance and others.

Hammer Production is a very dated film company with releases under there name such as the mummy (1959) recently the company has been known to have been ‘revived’ some of the flms involved in this revival are ‘wake wood, The woman in black.’’

Evaluation Question 1.

Before we started filming as a group at our locations for inspiration and to further our knowledge we watched many film intros in order to know the compulsories needed to be included. A quality in all film openings was the fact that they gave very little away, this is to intrigue the audience so they keep watching.  Other factors that keep the audience watching are things such as including famous celebrity actor names in the opening credits. The obligatory things needed in the opening are trademark names and logos of all companies, credits for directors and producers as well as the top billing cast.

As you can see here we followed the traditional opening style, we did this because we thought our plot for the intro was complex enough. We opened with the Production Company and studio.
(Main Actor: Ali Habib)
(Music Composer myself : Mohammed Bakkar)
We then went on to Credit the costume designer, casting manager, film editor, set design, creative director, executive producer as well at the title of our film ‘Lucifers Disciple.

Here is the opening sequence of the film ‘Wall-E’ and as you can see very similar to our film they opened with the production company Pixar and Walt Disney Pictures.
A way in which our intro challenges the norm conventions of film openings is we left the film title till the end of the opening sequence This is because the title gives away a lot with our character being a devil worshiper and the title being ‘Lucifer’s Disciple’ it would of left the audience asking less questions

As I stated earlier we for simplicity and ease we followed the traditional film opening this is done by showing the top billing cast.

Question 6

In this course I have learnt to use a range of different technologies to create our thriller. Now I ca say that I can use programs such as final Cur pro, garege band, soundtrack, blogger, go animate and ect. I can also say I can use a professional camera.

I think the most challenging format we used was garage band because what we found out is that the app has many types of sounds and music so it was really a challenge and we also faced problems when we were uploading the music with the video as the timing was not correct but as we got our feedback we ended up creating a very successful sound piece.

Question 3: What kind of institution might distribute your media product and why?

The production company used for our thriller film was CANDI STUDIOS. It is a local college film production company who sponsor low budget film young makers.

Our Film is a local realise a it was produced by a small independent company which helps young filmmakers make names for themselves in the film industry

As a local british film, we would have cheaper production values. Special effects wouldn't be as lavish as those of hollywood films but would still suit its purposes.

We distributed the film ourselves using social networks sites such a Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr because we don’t have money to advertise on TV or Billboards we decided that the best idea was telling family and friend on social networks sites to share the word and we also created a Facebook page. In the end a website was made so that it can charge people 2 pound to watch the movie. There has also a cinema screening, CandiStudios rented out a small cinema so the general public could witness our film.

I think we made the right choice going to CandiStudios as we were a very small group of friends trying to get our name out there in the film industry

Question 6:

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt to use a range of different new technologies to create my thriller. I have learnt to use a professional camcorder, tripod, and used programmes such as 'Final Cut Pro, Garageband, Sound track and of course, blogger.

To gain ideas and feedback we mainly used the internet and different forms of social networking sites as it was more convenient. We used the professional camcorders and tripod provided for the filming, we also used a small camera to take photos on set and reordered video blogs of how the filming was going. This was for us to know what we did in certain parts incase of having to refilm again. We also used softwares on the macs for editing out movie and thought it was fairly easy to learn.

Evaluation: Question 3

Question 3: What kind of institution might distribute your media product and why?

The production company used for our thriller film was CANDI STUDIOS. It is a local film production company who sponsor low budget film mades by budding young film makers.

The distribution company used for our thriller film was HAMMER FILM. Hammer is a London based production subsidiary of Exclusive Media and a legendary British film brand.

Our film is a local British release for mainly the uk audience. In order to get major funding for our film, we would have to go to many film festivals such as Cannes film festival, to network with film companies who would be interested in our little film.

As a local british film, we would have cheaper production values. Special effects wouldn't be as lavish as those of hollywood films but would still suit its purposes.

I think hammer film would be best suited to distributing our film since it is already london based and has produced/distributed many successful thriller/horror films in the past such as; The Abominable Snowman (1957), The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) and Dracula (1958). More recently Hammer Film has produced/distributed The Woman in Black which stars Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe. We could use this to our favour. As The Woman in Black gets bigger and more press, we could use this as a chance to advertise our film as well. With The Woman in black showing trailers literally everywhere, we could have a really quick 20 second trailer of our film straight after it.

As well as advertising through The Woman in Black, we could advertise online using major social networking sites. Since Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr  and Youtube have become very popular over the last few years, we could pay a small few to advertise on these sites.

After advertising, we would like our thriller film to be shown in local cinemas like, picture house, Cineworld and Vue. The most successful way to showcase our thriller film to our target audience would be to pay to show it The Screen on the Green. This cinema allows your to copy your film onto a dvd and pay to have a screening there. This way, through advertising we could let our target audience know about our film screening and then hopefully they come to watch it. If that is successful and the feedback is positive then we would be more confident to reaching out to bigger and better companies.

Evaluation: Question 1

Monday 12 March 2012

Evaulation Q1.

To make a good film openiing you have to intrique the audience to carry on watching your film. To make a good film opening you have to include all the names and logos of companies, relevent props, titles sequece and sound efects. This can be seen

Most films follow this traditional title sequence below. This timeline was made whilst watching the opening of "Sleeping with the enemy" Films always begin with the production and distribution company and then can vary from there.

We mostly followed the traditional title sequence. After the production company and distribution company was introduced (Hammer Productions & Candi Studio) we introduced the the name  followed the conventions of film openings by following the traditional title sequences. We first added the main characters name (Ali) then the music composer, costume designer, casting manager, film editor, set design, creative director, executive producer and then the title of our movie. The only big difference between ours and a traditional opening is that our title was shown at the end of the title sequence. We thought this would be more effective as in our movie we created a contrast with the character outside the house and inside the house. Thus we didn't want to give to much away before the big change with the name "Lucifers Disciples"

Main Problems We faced:

When filming the opening sequence we came across many different problems which caused us either to re-film entire scene's or lose some clips. We think that if we watched through all our clips before leaving the location would of helped us gain better shots. For example, we wasted a whole lesson filming the opening sequence at Muhammed's house as the continuity was poor and shots were badly angled.  This meant that we had to film the whole sequence again because of the weather as the snow had gone. However we thought that this helped us realise what we had to do to produce better footage. Overall the continuity of our new opening sequence is much better but the glare in the shots ruins it.

The weather  and lighting was also a big issue, because we filmed on two different days. The lighting came out much darker then we hoped meaning we had to cut and alter many of our shots. This meant we lost many good shots and effects. Also the contrast between the living room shot and the walking up the stairs affected the continuity. So if we had the chance to film this again we would have to consider brightening the bulb.

Other issues we faced was with adding the title sequence. Our opening sequence was quite short so there was not enough space and time to add all the title sequences affectively. Also we kept forgetting to frequently save our work which led to us losing some scenes and the changes we made.

Sound

Due to the importance of music in our film we had to take the making of our music very seriously, one of the ways in which we show this is through how we created two pieces of music as shown above. One was dark and slow, one was dark and more upbeat. We decided that our film was slow as it is so we needed the music to add some pace to it

Title Sequence

To create the title sequence we decided to use 'livefonts' and chose to do the 'itchy animations' font. We did the size of the fonts '50' in the colour dark red. We chose to use these as we thought it went with our theme of a spooky satanic thriller.

Producing our soundtrack.

For our film, as there was hardly any dialogue we needed to create some non diagetic music. First we had to choose the genre of our film and then allocate suitable music. as our film is a satanic thriller we decided some dark music in a minor scale would be appropriate.we Mohammed and Ali decided to use garageband as our means for producing the music, we layered some dark orchestral string sound then proceded to add bass and more string. We then looked at the timing of our film in order to fine cut it to synchronise, once finished we layered over the film for further editing.

Day Three Anaysis

In the final day of filming we managed to finish the rest of the sequence. This included the walking up the stairs and the bathroom scene. We thought that overall today was successful as we got some really good footage. For example the shot of him walking up the stairs and the candle is going into the camera shot. This made the scene look dark and eerie. One big problem was the weather. On the third day of filming the weather was much more sunnier which made some of the scenes too bright. For example when he was walking up the stairs the background was much more lighter then when we came into the house which affected the continuity of the sequence. Also because the scenes of in the living room already came out much darker then we hoped made the contrast between the two scenes too confusing. Therefore we had to try and shorten the clips to hide the light.

Editing update

Here is a update video of us editing our thriller video. In this video we are talking about the issues of our clips. For example some of the clips are too fast and way too short, therefore doesn't flow within the sequence.  We decided to change the speed of some parts of the clips.

Day two Analysis

On the second day of filming, we managed to film the first beginning of the sequence again, we also did the throwing keys on the blood table, the transformation in the living room, walking up the stairs and the bathroom scene.  We made sure we didn't change the distance between the camera and the actor to much to show continuity. We all thought that today was much more successful as we managed to film much more from the time given and that our shots came out better. Hoever we still did come across many problems. For example, in two of the clips of him walking down the streets there is a glare across the screen. This was one of the main issues of our opening sequence as we couldn't erase that scene as it was vital. We also had no time to re film it either.

Photo's from Day two

Here are some photos from our  second day of filming where we filmed the living room scene and the upstairs bath scenes.

Thursday 23 February 2012

Day One Analysis

For the first day of filming we decided to film the opening sequence in Finsbury park. This is because our main location was in morden and it was too far to travel and film within 1hr and 45mins. We decided to film outside Muhammeds house as we knew that there was a path up to his house. After a few hours of filming we managed to film the whole outside sequence however when we had the chance to edit it together we found many problems. The main issue was continuity, the different shots of him on the phone were either too close and to far from the actor so when we merged them together it became too confusing. The clip above is of one of our outakes. Due to not re watching our footage before leaving , we didn't realise that Muhammed was in the background and because we cant crop him out, the clip is couldnt be used. That was one of the vital clips of the opening scene and so we decided to re film the whole sequence again at the real location. The reason that we chose not to film that particular scene again is because of the change of weather.
However, we did think there were some good shots and ideas with these clips. For example by filming in this particular location we got a clip of tracking along a brick wall (shown in the video above) We thought this was effective as we thought that we could add the title sequence onto it.

Monday 20 February 2012

180 Degree Rule (unfinished)

The 180 degree rule is one of the main rules when filming. This rule is used to show continuity with the clips. It is the rule that when filming the camera should always stick to one side of the actors or the main focas. If the camera is to go pass to the other side of the main focas it will disorient the scene. It will look unclear and confusing. If the camera was too cross to the other side it would be classed as 'Crossing the line" causing a reverse angle.

Production Schedule

Thriller Storyboard

This is the storyboard for our thriller, and we will try and stick to it the best we can. There may be some changes but we will evaluate those changes as we go on.

Props

This is some of the props we are planning to use in our Thriller opening. Anna and Nabilla went out and gathered all the equipment needed for the opening. The candles are going to be used in the bathroom scene, placed around the bath. Also we may use it around the house to make it seem more scary. The deep dark red is going to used as our blood in our scene. The black book is going to be used as the bible that he is going to refer back too. We are planning to print out the cover and stick it on the black book to make it seem more realistic.

We found this black robe when we went down to Camden to go buy some props. We thought this would of been perfect for our thriller as it was long, gothic, hooded and scary looking. However it was too expensive and didn't fit our budget. However this is the kind of robe we are looking for.

On Set

En route to Location 101:

Day 1 of filming:

Overall, our first day of filming was pretty good. We got the shots that we needed even though it was ridiculously cold but we worked through it. We may have struggled in the beginning (issues with the locations) but in the end everything went well, here are some pictures:
